Before vinyl lettering there was hand painted lettering. A popular type of paint for this was something called 1 shot. Sign painters for many years would draw then hand paint letters directly onto windows, doors, and glass. Today we have the advantage of vinyl sheets that can be fed through mechanical plotters. These plotters have a knife (refered to as a pen) that cuts deep enough through the vinyl sheet as to not go all the way through the backing paper. What you are left with is a perfectly cut lettering product that you can apply to what ever surface you want. Gone are the days of hand painted lettering which is more of an art than a science.
If you're simply looking for the hand painted lettering look then we have a vinyl lettering font that is perfect for you. This is a font called artbrush which is a copy of hand painted lettering.
